Starting Small Business The Right Way
In any new small business venture, it is important to start things off in the right direction. In fact, for any business to succeed, a plan of some sort is a must. Starting small business off the right way doesn't need to be overly complex or hard. But there are 5 key things that need to happen first.
1. A solid business plan that takes into account the type of business you have. Is it a retail business with walk-ins or is it primarily online?
2. Once you've got your business plan, you need to make sure that you have the necessary skills to run and manage a business. If not, then you should consider figuring out what you don't know and then signing up at your local business center for free courses to learn what you need to know.
3. A solid bookkeeping system. You can either do this yourself with software such as QuickBooks, or hire an accountant. Hiring an accountant, when you are able to, is an excellent idea as that is his or her specialty. You can then focus on running your business effectively rather than dealing with the books, which can be a serious time sink. Building yourself a team will make the "grunt work" much less hard to deal with as well.
4. Be sure to invest in the proper tools and equipment make your daily operations as simple as possible. I'm not suggesting you spend your yearly budget on this, but don't skimp either. Yes there may be free tools available, but here "you get what you pay for" really does apply.
5. Discipline. This cannot be understated. Remember the lure of starting small business is the fact that you are "free" to set your own schedule. But the thing to remember is that a small business is work. You need to have set daily goals and accountability to reach them. And owning a small business can also mean doing things that you may not always like. So discipline is a must if you want to see your dreams become a reality.
6. (Bonus tip!) Have an unshakable vision. It is your vision that will ultimately decide the success or failure of your small business venture. It is your vision that will get you out of bed in the morning, even though your pillow may be calling you to sleep another hour. It will be your vision that will take your business through the inevitable rough patches that we all have from time to time. And it is your vision that will determine your success.
