The One Thing a Small Business Consultant Can't Provide
If you are a small business owner, you know the wealth of services you can provide your customers, but may not know how to get the word out effectively. A small business consultant can help with everything from offline marketing to brand exposure to computer consultation.
A smart consultant has the ability to look at a new client's business from all angles and determine what it needs to take it to the next level or to stop it from floundering, and should be able to articulate the plan in terms the small business owner can understand
From tax advice and bookkeeping, to computer and hardware purchases and installation to software training to virus removal, to website consultation, a small business consultant can and should be able to provide expertise on many of these things.
The one thing that he or she can't provide however is the determination to see things through. In some cases, when a business is failing, it may not be because the product is bad or the service is not competitive. It may simply be that the owner has reached a level beyond which he is uncomfortable to go, even if he knows it is the next necessary step in his businesses evolution.
If, however, the business owner gets past what is holding him back and is able and willing to implement the new changes, there may be another problem that comes up. And this one is more insidious and may not reveal itself right away.
Often times once a small business consultant's suggestions are implemented, be they getting their client on the web, installing new software or something different, the business may experience a renaissance of sorts, bounce back and appear to be healing for a week or two. But then, slowly, things will start to wind down again. The business may even fail, leading to the owner blaming the consultant.
Changes in business should always be viewed with a long term focus. There is no such thing as a quick fix. The owner needs to be able to sustain the change over the long term, sometimes over a year or two so that it fully takes effect. Being persistently consistent is the key at this juncture. If the owner can commit to following the consultant's suggestion on a daily basis, it will become a habit, usually within 21 days.
Once this habit is embedded in the process of the business, the owner will wonder how they ever did without it.
Ideally, the business owner will make the changes that are needed, no matter how long it takes for it is this that will ultimately save his or her business: the passion and persistence of the owner to see his business become the success he envisions. And that is something the small business consultant cannot provide, it must already be within the entrepreneur who wants his help.
