The Two Types of Business Consultant

If you are a small business owner you've probably at one time thought about hiring a business consultant to help in getting more exposure, sales and ultimately reputation.

But you may have wondered what type of business consultant you need and then been overwhelmed at the cornucopia of choice available to you and not made what could be the smartest business decision ever.

There are two broad categories of business consultant: online and offline.

An offline business consultant as you would expect, is primarily focused on getting your marketing out in the "real world" and in front of as many potential customers as possible.

This type of consultant is usually skilled in print graphic design, whether it be a brochure, poster or something else. They should also be skilled in offline copy writing, and using attraction marketing to draw customers to you as opposed to doing a hard sell.

The next type of business consultant is one that specializes in the online world. It is his or her job to look at your online marketing materials such as your website, blog and payment processor and after clearly understanding your business goals, design a plan to help improve exposure and increase traffic and sales.

The online business consultant needs to be skilled at writing online copy that will draw the reader in to click that order button. However, he has much less time to pique the reader's interest, 5 seconds at most, so he must also be skilled at determining what graphics will catch your potential customers' eye the most, without being too over the top.

Another process the online business consultant may refine is how you accept payment. He may discover that people get confused due to a checkout process that is too long and make suggestions to help ease the process, or even suggest another payment method entirely. This alone, when done right, can boost your online sale significantly.

Ultimately, whether offline or online, a small business consultant needs to be able to listen, understand, and articulate your business vision and goals so that he or she may be effective in implementing a plan that is specific to your business.

The choice of online or offline will really depend on your business goals and long-term vision for your business. If you are primarily getting your business through walk-ins and word of mouth and have more than you can handle (a good problem to have!), then an offline business consultant may be the best choice for you.

If however, you are primarily an online company and get your customer base and sales from the Internet, then an online business consultant is the way to go as he or she can boost your income, exposure and ultimately help you become the authority in your particular niche.

Regardless of which you choose it is important to realize that you are making a long-term investment in your business that will benefit you if done right.

If you truly wish to succeed online, then you need help from the best.

This blog provides me with loads of inforamative stuff whenever I visit here. In addition I would say that in Consulting there are nearly as many types of businesses in the consulting universe as there are in the realm of traditional business. Nearly every industry under the sun has spawned a thriving ecosystem of self-starters and professional gurus who have chosen to make their services available to the highest bidder.
